12/12/13

Here's a intriguing little video for you to watch.  You may remember it from last year but I want you to watch it again and pay very close attention to the close-ups, dramatic lighting and fabulous editing.   It's admittedly not a funny close-up video but the use of close-ups to tell a story is top notch!  It's got great music which adds to the mood and fantastic editing.  Best of all it lets the viewer determine the ending!

I'm not sure what the whole meaning of the video is but I like the use of lots of close-ups!  Also notice the beginning how they condense time.

Let's see if you can figure it out for me!  Watch the video and tell me what you think the point of the video is.  What's the story being told here?

Also describe how they condensed time in the opening sequence.

Please finish the warm-up promptly and then turn off your computers and put all electronic devices away and give the presenter you undivided attention.

Watch the following video and PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO HOW TIME IS COMPRESSED!  You all need to be using this technique of compressing time more in your videos, and in fact I'll expect it in your next project!  Also notice the brilliant use of close-ups!

When you finish watching the video briefly explain what I mean by compressing time and tell me how did they compressed time in this commercial.

Watch today's clip and answer the following questions:

1. What is the 180 degree rule?  Explain.

2. Why is it important?

3. If actors in a scene change sides, what should you do?

Everyone but Belen and CJ must do today's warm up and assignment

3-Point Lighting Explained! from Bill Simmon on Vimeo.

*After you finish the warm up today follow today's assignment instructions located below the video

Warm-Up:
Watch the following video on lighting.  In your warm up for today outline the names of the 3 lights (3 Points) used in a 3-point lighting set-up and explain the purpose for each light.
Today's Assignment:
Create your opening titles and credits for your video.  I will come around tomorrow at the beginng of class and ask you to show me what you have done.  Only those teams that ALL member have done this will be released to shoot tomorrow when I return.

Please only watch the first 7 minutes for this warm up.

Some of you are going to do the ghost video for your project.  A lot of it will be done in post-production and the technique use for shooting  (make sure the camera DOES NOT move) is very important.

Here is another way to do it that I think is very creative, but I don't think many of you will be able to get your hands on the supplies needed.  In your warm up for today, from the short film that starts this video and answer the following:

1. Do you see more close ups or more wide shots? Why?

2. what mood does the music create?

3. Do you think that every shot was scripted or do you think it was made up as they went along?  Explain why you think this way.
OK, it's time. . .   I'm finally going to give you the key to a GREAT, AWARD WINNING,  video:  It's what you DON'T see that matters the most!  That, combined with great close-ups, a compelling title sequence and the right mood-creating music!  After you watch today's video tell me how it left you feeling.  Also tell me what you think the story is that's being told!

Once again, by far the three most important parts of a great video are: Great close-ups, a compelling title sequence and the right mood creating music!  Also, it's what you DON'T see that matters the most.  Be sure to think about and answer the questions carefully!

The Game from George Alger on Vimeo.

Watch this video for it's stunning title sequence, then continue watching for the brilliant editing and producing.

In your warm up for today, answer the following questions:

1. What is your honest opinion of the title sequence?

2..What did you like about this video?

3. What would you change about this video if you could?

Remember, a real, substantial title sequence is a requirement of your new project.

Good title sequences can make your video really stand out from the rest of the pack, so don't take them for granted!
Think of them as a little "mini-movie" within your full movie or video.

Take a look at the first video, which is an awesome title sequence, (keep in mind the credits at the end of the first video would not be seen in a true title sequence which is meant to begin a movie or video) then watch the short second video which will give you some interesting insight into how it was made.  In your warm up today answer the following questions:

1. What is the purpose of a title sequence?

2. What did you like most about this title sequence?

3. Why did they storyboard EVERY shot?

4. How did I say you should think of your title sequence and why should you not take them for granted?

Watch this video and tell me why audio is more important the the video!
Today's video is about 3 point lighting.  The second video is referring to still photography lighting but the concepts apply to lighting for video as well, and the technique they use on the background adds another dimension of professionalism.  In today's warm up tell me what subject you would like to see video's posted about next month and ALSO answer the following:

1. Why do they say to put a light on the background?

2. what is one of the names for the light on the back of the person?

3. What is the name of the light coming in from the right side of the person? (think about this BEFORE you answer)

Warm-up - 3/30/13

Assignment for 5/22/13

NO ONE IS TO GO OUT AND SHOOT TODAY OR USE THE CAMERAS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  Chelsea can check out a camera after school for Mr. M's  video)

Instructions:
Get the footage that you have been shooting for your project and load it up on every team members computer.  Each person must edit their own version of the finished product.

Since no one did this as instructed on the last project (and you will be graded down accordingly) let's try it again.  I will be coming around to each person tomorrow to see and grade what they have completed:

Create an opening graphic where the text moves onto the screen by using a "push", "slide" or other video transition (just like you would between two shots) at the beginning of text clip.

DO NOT CREATE THE ENTIRE PAGE OF TEXT ON ONE TEXT CLIP.  Instead, create at least two lines of text on separate text clips or pages and then bring them onto the screen at slightly delayed times.  (put one on the video 2 line and one just above it on the video 3 line)

Chelsea can demonstrate as she has done this before (although she has just dissolved on the separate lines of text)

Add music to create the right mood for your video.

You have today and tomorrow to edit, no other time will be given as there is only one shot!
